For me, the Soviet Union was the paradigm of Modernity: a planned and technocratic state that unified difference and believed in the 'grand narrative'.  

... it didn't seem like that when, as a child I used to steal aboard the aged Soviet cargo ships in Birkenhead Docks , where the gangway guard seemed more concerned with keeping crew on board than inquisitive children off.

This is a series of three paintings in which I use Cyrillic script to stimulate a memory of that huge, and temporary, marriage of doctrine and technology.
