The use of mortar as  a base layer and the heavy impasto suggest a sweltering stoke hold in a coal-fired ship.  The conditions that stokers used to suffer are hard to believe:

I got the briefest taster of what it might be like when, as a Midshipman, I was sent into a main boiler of HMS Albion to sweep soot off the tubes: the boiler had been shut down for a few hours, but the heat was almost unbearable.
